Besides having clear reference photos, I liked the tilt of the head in both of these commissions. I also choose photos where the subject is looking into the camera.Who can resist these guys?

One year of practice
I”ve been drawing in colored pencil for a year now with marked improvement. It’s a challenging medium, vastly different from oils or watercolor. You can achieve great detail, but its excruciatingly slow. I wish I had more patience. Anyway here is an example from last April and this April.
Happy Easter
A lovely perk

Redwood Tree
I take so many photos when I’m hiking but don’t ever work them up into a drawing, even though that is my intention when I take them. Here is one that I did. I love the redwoods and am in awe of them. If you want artwork based on a photo you love contact me.
Strong Lighting
I loved this photo not only for its subject but for the strong sunlight caught streaming through the woods. My photo reference here was from Sasint on pixabay.
One of my favorites
A good friend took a photo of this raven and I loved the thought of working it up into a drawing. It had quite a long ugly period but I finished it and now it’s one of my favorites!

Sister trees
I photographed these trees in the fog and loved how ethereal they looked. I tried to capture that in a few different drawings, but not so happy with the results. The top left is the photo.
Me and the sunset
This was a lot of fun to do once I knew what I was doing. I originally intended to do just the self-portrait but I hadn’t cut down the paper and had a lot of spare room to the right. So I combined it with a photo I took this week of the sunset. NoContinue reading “Me and the sunset”
